I AM UNEMPLOYED AND IF THE SITUATION OF MOTHERHOOD / PATERNITY BEGINS, WHAT HAPPENS?

20/02/2018

If your maternity or paternity happens while you are receiving a contributory level unemployment benefit, you must request the suspension of this in order to start the maternity or paternity benefit paid by the National Institute of Social Security (INSS).

Unemployment benefit is not consumed while these situations last but, at the end, you can resume the suspended service for the remaining period to be received and in the amount that corresponded at the time of suspension.

Once the maternity / paternity period has ended, and once the demand for employment has been reactivated, you have 15 days to apply to your benefit office to resume the right to unemployment benefit. If requested outside of this period, it will be resumed from the date of application and will involve the loss of as many days of benefit as between the date on which the maternity / paternity benefit ended and the date of presentation of the application.
